Connection & Audio

  • Ensure you have an internet connection.

  • Place your device close so you may hear the audio clearly.

Arriving

  • When you join the meeting your audio and video are disabled.

  • You can control this yourself, and as the host I can control your audio only.

Video Adjustment

  • As an instructor is it helpful, but not mandatory, that I see you as best as possible.

  • That being said you don't need to fuss about with your camera during the lesson.

How much time do I need? & Questions

  • The lessons will be ~ 50 minutes & there’s a 15 minute discussion afterwards.

  • This is when you can ask questions. If you are REALLY stuck during the lesson, yes, you can un-mute yourself and ask.

Get You & Your Space Ready:

Space:

  • Ideally you should be able to make a snow angel on the ground without any obstruction.

  • Make sure you have space to lie down comfortably

Props:

  • Yoga mat with something covering it (sliding is an action used often in lessons – can you slide on your surface without sticking too much?)

  • A towel folded for your head to rest on - pillows not advised, they are not a neutral head rest.

  • Have a chair nearby as well in case the lesson includes sitting or if you need an alternate position to sitting on the floor.

  • Blanket; people sometimes get cold doing ATM™ lessons.

Attire:

Make sure you are wearing clothes that you are warm and comfortable in, i.e. no tight clothing that will restrict your movements. During lessons it’s common to get sleepy and or cold.

If you have never done an ATM™ lesson:

Instructions will be verbal, the practitioner will repeat actions multiple times.

The intent is to move slowly and make small movement with minimal effort or resistance.

Take breaks from the instructions when you feel ready to do so, not only when the practitioner calls for a rest. This means listen to your needs. You can pause easily and rejoin once you have reflected and rested. You are responsible for your body, especially since I will not have visual contact of (all) the participants.

If you have pain or pain while doing the movements:

Imagining the movement is a strategy used in this method. Sometimes used for everyone, not just those with pain. Imagining the movement creates an action of engagement in the nervous system.

Do only the beginning of the movement action - there is sensorial information in the engagement and disengagement of action.

Try reducing the repetitions and or amplitude. The number of repetitions and the amplitude of the movement are not the measure of success. The strategies in this method include the importance of the beginning (or end) of a movement. Quality of movement is important, as is your comfort level.

If one side hurts, try the other side, if this persists, do the lesson on the side the doesn't hurt and then imagine the movements when you approach the other side.

There may be an alternate position that is better suited to you, ie. sitting on a chair versus sitting on the ground. The practitioner (may) make some suggestions that could help.

What People Are Saying

“I have been attending Erica’s Awareness Through Movement® classes for about eight months now, and I find she is a knowledgeable and committed teacher. She has a nice way of instructing and pacing us through the class filled with imagery and detailed anatomical references. Throughout the class I am encouraged to slow down, pay attention to the sensations of the movement, and find the ease and softness in my explorations. I have discovered the power of imagination in this work. By the end of the class, I often feel weighted, wide, relaxed and alert. Feldenkrais is a hidden secret and I am so happy to have found it.”

— Jen

“I loved Thursday’s session! It was so so so helpful for me! I’ve had a lot of dental work done and really struggle with jaw tension. I’ve been searching for really subtle yet powerful and effective ways to deal with the tension and I felt so great after Thursday’s session. I felt so free in my pelvis and cervical spine. I’ve been really locked in my cervical and thoracic spine, especially lately with everything going on, and I felt so much more open, easeful, and integrated in my movements.”

— Anonymous

“I really noticed an opening in both my side ribs when I stood up, so that was amazing and unexpected. My neck has also been quite stiff in the last week, and it feels a bit more mobile.”

— Shannon

“Erica's classes have been a gift. Each lesson is so rich in the depth it permits me to access in my body and presence of mind. Erica's selection of lessons are thoughtfully curated and diligently communicated, bringing a sense of gentle comfort and support to each session."
